Winter Wales Laning and Social Weekend
22nd February 16
Words and pictures by Mark Morgan

A mild grey Sunday morning in February found us once more in the car park of the Grand Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells, while James gave his prep talk before the days laning got underway. This was our 4th winter green laning & social event, and for 2016 we had to increase the number of groups running from 2 to 3 due to the ever increasing popularity of the event format. Much of that increased interest is down to an addition to the 4x4 Adventures personnel in the form of Will Overton who is responsible to event marketing.

As is the norm on our winter event the weekend had begun the previous day with many of the participants arriving early at the hotel to avail themselves of the spa facilities & pool, or to simply explore the local area. It had been arranged that we would all meet in the bar for around 6. 30pm for pre-dinner drinks and a chance to get to know some of the new guests joining us for the first time, while renewing acquaintances with returning customers. The drinks & conversations flowed easily and soon we all moved to the dining area for our customary 3 course gourmet dinner. A good evening was had by all, and following a peaceful night and a huge breakfast we all gathered in the car park ready for the off.

For 2016 we had a full complement of 15 trucks, split into 3 groups, each with a lead vehicle from 4x4 Adventures. Each group would be doing a completely different route. Some of the 4x4 Adventures team had already been in the area for a couple of days. Part of the service we offer is to pre-drive all the routes to ensure they are all open, in good condition and sustainable, and to cary out essential maintenance to the routes if needed. All our trips are designed to be non-damaging to both vehicles and to the unsurfaced tracks we use, meaning that factory standard trucks have no problems. Our routes are also suited to drivers not used to driving off road and, although challenging in parts, present no obstacles that even the least confident drivers can't overcome with a little advice form our experienced guides.

Unfortunately, recent heavy rains, which had continued through the previous night, meant that the old favourite of Strata Florida was out. However, each group had plenty of other great lanes to explore throughout the Elan Valley and the areas both north and south of Llandindod. The following images give an impression of the trip.

If this has piqued your interest and you may be interested in doing something similar then please keep an eye on our website for details of upcoming events, or contact 4x4 Adventures directly to discuss your individual requirements. We are happy to tailor activities or events to your needs.
